Projecten Rabbit Hole (2024)

In the interactive performance Rabbit Hole, the boundaries between online and offline blur, and the audience becomes part of Samy's chat forums through their phones.

Samy doesn't leave his room, no longer goes to school, and ignores his mother and sister. He has withdrawn into an online community, an escape from his daily reality of bullying, loneliness, and a broken family. Online, he makes new friends: Neo17 and his followers. His sister Hanna thinks they are misogynists, but according to Samy, they understand how things really are. And besides, aren't all of Hanna's leftist friends just as extreme? Hanna and Samy find themselves in direct opposition to each other.

Interactive performance

In the 2022-2023 season, the international version of Rabbit Hole was created in collaboration with the Akademie für Theater und Digitalität in Dortmund, the Austrian Schäxpir Festival, and the Ars Electronica Center in Linz, where the world premiere took place on June 17, 2023.

Rabbit Hole is part of the European project ACuTe, a collaboration between 14 partners from 10 countries, focusing on new technology and theater, and is co-financed by Creative Europe. For the interactive part of the performance, Toneelmakerij and Theater Sonnevanck collaborated with the Innovation
of Theater Utrecht.

Rabbit Hole by Toneelmakerij in collaboration with Theater Sonnevanck is an interactive performance that is very much of its time. In this unique cross-media environment, the boundaries between online and offline have completely blurred. Through their mobile phones, the audience becomes part of the chat forums where the isolated Samy roams. Will you follow him into the Rabbit Hole? Or will you stay outside?tekst Daniël van Klaveren regie Paul Knieriem  dramaturgie en internationale samenwerking Paulien Geerlings kostuumontwerp Sabine Staartjes lichtontwerp Jasper Nijholt  video- en geluidsontwerp Marco Mooren, Mees van der Wijk video- & geluid content design Mario Simon, Booi Kluiving interactieve componenten gebouwd in Getiyo.com Morphix Productions narratief & game design Jedidjah Julia Noomen ontwikkeling digitaal platform Morphix Productions concept publieksapp Innovation:Lab/ Theater Utrecht met Tomer Pawlicki/Harun Balcı, Gonca Karasu techniek Shirley Versteeg, Joram van Vliet productie Sanne Liebregts publiciteit Lonneke Laurant, Irit Yosef, Selman Aqiqi educatie Martien Langman publiciteitsbeeld Jan Hoek gecofinancierd door  Europese Unie
